London, Sheffield, Bristol or Remote (UK)

Closing date: 3rd September at 11.30pm

Do you have proven experience of designing end-to-end services that meet user needs and intended organisational outcomes? Then join Shelter as a Service Designer and you could soon be playing an important role within our Design team.

About Shelter
A home is a fundamental human need, as essential as education or healthcare. Yet millions of people across Britain struggle on a daily basis with homelessness, bad housing conditions, soaring rents, discrimination and the threat of eviction. So, we are striving for change — with individuals, in communities, across society – and leading the way to a safe home. We need ambitious, best-in-class individuals who are passionate about our cause to join us at this exciting time. This is your chance to play a part in the fundamental change we are striving to achieve.

It’s a particularly exciting time to join our digital team. That’s because we have ambitious plans to grow and evolve it. Our cross-functional in-house team spans front and back end development, UX, content production, social media, analytics and more. We also set the example of best practice discovery and innovation. Put simply, we’re digital leaders, collaborating with others across the organisation to deliver first class content, products and services in an agile, iterative and data-driven manner. And, with a fresh organisational strategy in place, this is an opportunity that’s too good to miss.

About the team
Our design team plays a key role within Shelter by producing engaging user experiences for our advice services, campaigns and fundraising. Very much digital and creative leaders, they collaborate across the organisation to deliver first-class design, insight and services in an agile, iterative and data-driven manner. They are also part of a Central Digital team which includes web development, design, analytics, product management and delivery management. They all sit within a Campaigns, Policy and Communications directorate that works closely with other teams – particularly content and creative colleagues. Collectively, they set the example for Shelter in digital best practice, discovery and innovation.

About the role
Reporting to a Senior Service Designer, you will contribute to all stages of the design process and will be part of one or more cross-functional product teams to create and improve services across our many different channels. You will work independently and in close collaboration with other Service Designers, UX Designers, User Researchers and Product Managers, as you seek to deliver tangible and measurable outcomes for our wide range of users. Also we’ll rely on you to take an end-to-end and front-to-back view of our services and help make this visible for others.

We are happy to talk about flexible working, personal growth, and to promote a workplace where you can be yourself and achieve success based only on your merit.

About you
Someone who champions user centred design thinking, you have a flair for developing designs based on evidence of user needs and intended organisational outcomes. You’re also adept at visualising and articulating complex services, problems and concepts into easily understandable and actionable outputs and know how to draw on the right tools and approaches to map journeys and visualise service ecosystems.

The ability to apply logical and creative thinking to solve complex problems is important too, as are strong communication and facilitation skills. What’s more, you’re happy to take the initiative to identify opportunities in the problem space, move effortlessly from analysis to synthesis or design intent and can help to guide colleagues through different stages of the design process. Crucially, you can see the big picture – you’re aware of organisational strategy and requirements and can help your product team to understand and work in this context.

Benefits
We offer a wide range of benefits, including 30 days of annual leave, enhanced family friendly policies, a comprehensive contributory pension scheme, employee assistance programme, interest free travel and tenancy deposit loans, cycle to work, retail discounts and access to exclusive Shelter fundraising events.

Shelter helps millions of people every year struggling with bad housing or homelessness through our advice, support and legal services. And we campaign to make sure that, one day, no one will have to turn to us for help. We’re here so no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.
